History

The Soldiers of Gloucester Museum is located in the Gloucester Docks. The museum was originally opened by HRH The Duke of Gloucester in 1980. It was rececntly shut while it underwent a refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and opened in April 2014. The museum now showcases the story of of two famous county regiments, TheGloucestershire Regiment (The Glorious Glosters), including their antecedents The 28th Regiment of Foot/61st Regiment of Foot and The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars.

The items on display have been accumulated over the last 300 years and exhibits include life size dioramas, sound effects, archive film and many fixed displays reflecting campaigns for various historic wars.

Held at the museum are three Victoria Crosses awarded to soldiers of the Regiment to Surgeon Herbert Taylor Reade (1857), Col. Daniel Burges (1918), and Col. James Carne (1951).

For those of you with an interest in artefacts, you are able to view 12,000 different pieces online with full descriptions. The museum also offers the chance for you to view a database online of approximately 10,000 soldiers from the 18th and 19th centuries and a World War I database containing details of over 43,000 individuals You are also able to book an appointment to view the archives.
