Sandford Parks Lido was opened in 1935 and uniquely offered heated pools. At the time, heated pools were not that common so many people would of been surprised when entered the pool and feeling the warmth of the water.
The Lido was under considerable threat over the next few years; once for not being able to break even or make a profit and a couple years later as the lido had been built on uncertain ground where the repairs were failing.
Cheltenham Borough Council started a charitable Trust which took control and redeveloped the Lido to stabilise the main pool, ppol deck and promenade paving.
Events
The Cheltenham Triathlon is open to all abilities over teh age of 17, you can compete in personal or team challenges. The swim takes place in the larger outdoor swimming pool while the run and cycle take place around Cheltenham and the Cotswold hills. There is a 500m swim, 13km cycle and 2.5km run.
The aim for the challenge is to raise money for LINC (Leukaemia Intesive Chemotheropy) and Sandford Lido Ltd.
