History

Set in the scenic location of Prestbury Park the Cheltenham Racecourse is home to the most prestigeous horse racing event, the Gold Cup held in March.

The raceouse showcases its own railway station which is run by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

There are three courses at the Racecourse, two of which run along side each other, the Old and the New. There is also then the cross-country course which is laid inside the main racecourse and is used for the cross-country steeple chases.

The Centaur is one of the largest auditoria in the South West of England and is based at the Everyman Theatre and can seet over 2,000 people and have space for approximately 4,000.

Events

The Centaur can cater for parties of 2,250 or a small dinner dance for 800.

It has seen many events from film crews, award ceremonies and high-profile exhibitions and concerts and even some studding weddings.

Many famous celebrities have performed here including The Vamps, Lee Evans, Rizzle Kicks, Stereophonics, Jon Richardson and Jack Dee and many more.

The racecourse is also the venue for the Wychwood Music Festival, graduation ceremony and summer ball for the University of Gloucestershire.

Horse Racing

The Gold Cup is the most well know horse racing event and encourages thousand to flock to Cheltenham to attend.

This National Hunt horse race covers a distance of 3 miles 2 1/2 furlons and includes 22 fences to be jumped.

The first race took place in July 1819 which was held on Cleeve Hill and was contested over 3 miles.
