History

Greyfriars Priory is one of the three Gloucester monasteries supported by Henry III. It was founded in 1231 on land granted by Lord Berkeley to the church.

By 1285 the priors was home to forty begging friars that were locked into a series of disputes with the monks of St Peter's over there shared water supply. This was later settled by Edward the Black Prince resulting in the victory of the Franciscans.

Later in 1518, again helped by the Berkeley family, the church was rebuilt in its present form. Greyfriars Priory is particulary interesting as it is one of its kind in country with both the nave and north aisle being almost equal in height.
