History

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, an NHS district general hospital in Great Western Road, Gloucester, England. The hospital has more than 600 beds and 14 operating theatres serving western and southern Gloucestershire and parts of Herefordshire and also runs Cheltenham General Hospital.

The hospital was first developed between 1914 - 1918 and was later re-deveoloped in the 1960's. The British Red Cross society took of the west wing to treat the patients injured by war and later the east. The building was completed after the war.

The hospital opened a ten-storey tower in 1975, which now accommodates most of the wards. Each floor contains two wards, both offering 30 beds each. A £50 million extention later opened in 2005. The idea behind the green floors of the extention is to minic the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds for peace and relaxation.

Gloucestershire Royal Hospital provides general hospital services and has a 24 hour Emergency department and has a new state of the art Children's Centre.

There are large car parks for patients and visitors, for which charges apply. Some visitors are exempt from payment: eg: parents staying overnight with very sick children; patients undergoing treatment such as radiotherapy; parents feeding babies on the Neo Natal Unit.

The hospital tries it best to be as friendly and helpful as possible. If English isn't your first language they are able to arrange a face-to-face or telephone interpretation for you. The nurses on ward or the department will be there to help and support you no matter what.

The Cotswold Hospital Radio has been broadcasting for over 35 years bringing confort to all its patients over the years. It is run by a group of dedicated volunteers with pre-recorded quiet music at night and a livelier version during the day. It can be found on Channel 9 on the radio next to the patients bedside. The volunteers can even be seens walking round the hospital and collecting song requests to make the broadcast even more enjoyable and comforting for them.
